This last month we have just started our brand new, first ever literary magazine! I am the editor in chief for it. we have been looking at the perfect layouts but we cannot start unless we have about 50-75 submissions, sadly we only have like 15 :(. Our class also started this photography project where every week we have to take 4 pictures that represent the category. Well I have to get to taking these photos, byeeeeeeee.

This month we learned how to make an online layout and we all got to pitch our ideas and I got the story "Virtual Reality". The online layout takes more skill than the print layout, you have to include links and the print has to be larger than in the print so people can read it better. My strength this month was my story pitches, I got two stories pitched. We also did a project about Photojournalism which involved all the skills: rule of thirds, vantage point, sense of place, fill the frame, disturbance, use of lines, and proximity. It was such a great learning experience.
This month's issue was one of the best work I have ever done. The publication process went amazing and my story will be published in the newspaper this month. I worked on the layout for page 3 in our newspaper and it was some of my best work. My strength was how good I wrote my story in the November issue. My weakness was probably my procrastination on it. Next month I will not wait till the last minute to do my story and I will start earlier.
Something new that I learned for this month's issue was how erratic it is a day before layouts are done. Writers are freaking out because people don't have pictures, things deleted, the text won't fit, etc. A strength that I gained was my writing skill, my writing skill improved, it improved so much that I am being published in the Jagwire this month! A weakness that I had this month was not working with my partner. My focus for the November issue is just to keep working hard. The extra duty assignment I was given was to be apart of the Distribution Crew. I plan to make sure everyone enjoys reading our newspaper.
A new skill that I learned during the September issue was how to layer text and images in Adobe InDesign. A weakness that I had in September was all of my pitches, my pitches were not strong enough so none of my stories were in the newspaper. A strength in September was how fast I could learn the tutorials of how to use Adobe InDesign. My focus for the October issue is writing a good story for the newspaper about Halloween mazes, haunted houses, and scary attractions. I will overcome this assignment by working well with my partner.
New skills that I learned during the August issue was that everyone helps everyone. No matter how small or big your story is anyone will help you. As a freshman joining the JNN Program it was new for me, so I didn't know much but it was okay because everyone helps you. My weakness for the month of August using InDesign, I didn't know what InDesign was at first so I had to watch a 4 hour video on how to use it, but now I know the basics of it and get it. My strengths in the August issue were strong writing and good story ideas, my ideas did not get published so I just have to try a little harder. My focus for the September issue is more layout participation, not just showing up 3 days. The extra duty I am hoping to be is the pollster because the job description is the perfect job for me.
When pitch idea day comes along it is crazy. There are so many good pitches and you can only pick so many and some don't get chosen... It's not bad or anything but it just doesn't feel good because everyone else's stories is getting chosen and then there is you. So you just keep on trying and trying and trying until you finally get one of your pitches in the newspaper and it is the best feeling in the world.
